Since the introduction of vaccination, myths and misconceptions regarding vaccination have been present. Scientific research in psychology has shown that addressing these misconceptions is difficult: mere reading about a myth, even about a myth’s refutation, can strengthen the myth, rather than weaken its influence. Likewise, an explicit and strong negation of a risk can paradoxically increase rather than decrease the perception of risk in readers. The steps outlined below, proposed in the scientific literature, aim to help public health professionals address vaccination misconceptions in the best possible way.

• Core facts: a refutation should always emphasize the facts, not the myth. The introduction should only present key facts easy to memorize.
• Explicit warnings: before any mention of a myth, text, visual or oral cues should clearly warn that the upcoming information is false.
• Alternative explanation: any knowledge gaps left by addressing misconceptions linked to vaccination should be filled by providing an alternative casual explanation for why the myth is false.
• Graphics: core facts should be displayed graphically when possible.
• Careful language: moderate language and formulations should always be used when saying that there is no risk as strong negations of risk may backfire and lead to a higher risk perception.

Why are there so many reports of autism following vaccination? A mathematical assessment | The Logic of Science

The idea that vaccines cause autism is one of the most persistent myths that I have ever encountered, and it seems that no amount of evidence will ever cause it to disappear. Indeed, I recently wrote a lengthy post in which I thoroughly reviewed the scientific literature on this topic, and I showed that there are no high quality studies supporting this myth, but there are multiple very large studies that debunked it. Nevertheless, many people responded to the post by insisting that vaccines must cause autism because there are so many cases of parents reporting the onset of autism shortly after vaccinating. They were adamant that these anecdotes could not be chance results and must mean that vaccines cause autism. To quote one commenter:

“How can you sit there and say that observing an adverse reaction AFTER a vaccine is given doesn’t mean it was the vaccine? So, what…? It’s just a random coincidence? I think not...”

In Ukraine, 2 cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) have been confirmed, with dates of onset of paralysis on 30 June and 7 July 2015. Both are from the Zakarpatskaya oblast, in south-western Ukraine, bordering Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland. One child was 4 years old and the other 10 months old at the time of onset of paralysis...

This is not a reason to refuse vaccine. It's a terrfying reminder why why the entire family needs to be up to date on its vaccines. If polio doesn't scare you, you've never lived in a country where it was rife.

Australian mother plans to set up anti-vaccination day care centre - Mashable

An Australian mother has announced she is starting her own childcare centre for parents who refuse to have their children vaccinated.

Not so much a day care centre as the ideal breeding ground for many potentially deadly diseases. The Australian anti-vax lobby is insane, even by "n ormal" antivax standards.

Of course, she may change her tune when she realises how much it costs, especially since she won't be eligible for subsidies or tax credits. If the whole shebang is legal, of course.
